bible_contradiction_resolved_is_everyone_descended_from_adam_and_eve

For today’s post we will tackle the question the Skeptic Annotated Bible asked: Is everyone descended from Adam and Eve?

Here are the answers which the skeptic believes indicate a Bible contradiction:

Yes, everyone is descended from Adam and Eve.

Now the man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.” (Genesis 3:20)

No, some are not.

Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually.” (Hebrews 7:3)

Skeptic reasoning: “Melchisidec just appeared, without father or mother. So he wasn’t descended from Adam and Eve.”

that the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were [a]beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not [b]remain with man forever, [c]because he is also flesh; [d]nevertheless his days shall be 120 years.” The [e]Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of mankind, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.” (Genesis 6:2-4)

Skeptic reasoning: The Nephilim were the giant offspring of the sons of God (angels?) and the daughter of men. So they weren’t desscended entirely from Adam and Eve.

We also saw the Nephilim there (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”” (Numbers 13:33)

Skeptic reasoning: “And at least some of the Nephilim survived the flood, according to the book of Numbers. (See the NIV translation below.) So maybe there are still some giant offspring of God’s sons around today!”

(All Scriptural quotation comes from the New American Standard Bible)

Here’s a closer look at whether or not there is a contradiction:

Plato by David Talcott

David Talcott.  Plato.  Phillipsburg, NJ: Presbyterian and Reformed Publishing, November 1, 2023. 144 pp.

4 out of 5

Purchase: Westminster Amazon

Have you heard of the philosopher Plato?  This Greek philosopher has made a tremendous impact in Western thought.  Philosopher Alfred North Whitehead have famously described European philosophical tradition as consisting of a series of footnotes to Plato.  This book is part of the Great Thinkers series published by P&R Publishing and so far I have six volumes in this series.  Like other titles in this series this volume reflect the editors’ aim of presenting readers Great Thinkers with care and accuracy while also providing an analysis and critique from the standpoint of a biblical Worldview and also Van Til’s apologetics as a tool of analysis.

There’s an older couple in our extended family that’s struggling a bit. They’re in their mid-70s and living on very limited income. The husband gets an average-size monthly Social Security check, but the wife’s work history is shorter and her check is much smaller. He supplements their income by driving a bus for a local school district, but won’t be able to continue because of increasing physical problems. They live in a two-bed apartment and their rent is being raised from $1750 to $2000 per month. They anticipate having to scale back to a single-bedroom apartment. But even with that change they will struggle without his bus-driver income.

Mission To the Burmese People

Adoniram-Ann-Judson

Amazon: To the Golden Shore – The Life of Adoniram Judson

But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to keep all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”” – (Matthew 28:16-20 LSB)

Burma is the ancient name for the current country of Myanmar whose official name is: the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Geographically, the country:

Stretch[es] from latitude 10° N to about 28° 30′ N, Myanmar is the northernmost country of Southeast Asia; it is shaped like a kite with a long tail that runs south along the Malay Peninsula. The country is bordered by China to the north and northeast, Laos to the east, Thailand to the southeast, the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal to the south and southwest, Bangladesh to the west, and India to the northwest. Its total length from north to south is about 1,275 miles (2,050 km), and its width at the widest part, across the center of the country at about the latitude of the city of Mandalay, is approximately 580 miles (930 km) from east to west.[1]

The Trinity an introduction

Scott Swain.  The Trinity: An Introduction.  Wheaton, IL: Crossway, October 20, 2020.  161 pp.

4 out of 5

Purchase: Amazon

Are you looking for a summary book on the Trinity that is under two hundred pages?  This is a book I recommend.  This is from the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series from Crossway and it’s the second volume I read from this series.  Previously I read the book on the Holy Spirit in this series and it impressed me so I was eager to see how the work on the Trinity would turn out.  I was also interested to see if it would be as good as the Short Studies in Biblical Theology Seriesthat I have immensely enjoyed reading for years from the publisher.

Establish the need: Most Christians recognize that Pastors/Elders and Deacons have some authority, but does the Congregation (all the members of the church) also have any authority?

Purpose: We will see a Biblical argument in support for the church congregation’s authority so that we will be aware and recognize the congregation’s authority in our church life.

Establish the need: Do you appreciate older men of God who are leaders?

Purpose: We need to internalize six truths from 2 Kings 2 in order to relate to older generation and younger generation of men of God in a biblical way.

  • We need to know older Men of God won’t always be with us (v.1-6)
  • We need to take up the mantle of older Men of God who departed (v.7-14)
  • We need to not idolize older men of God who departed (v.15-18)
  • We need to realize the next generation men of God will have different work (v.19-22)
  • We need to be warn not to mock the next generation men of God  (v.23-25)
  • We need to look for one who turn death to life (v.19-22)
We will look at part six.

Over the years I have met Christians who told me they have been impacted by the writing of John Owens.  There are books covering the topic of John Owen’s contribution to theology but it is important to understood his theology in the context of his understanding and practice of being a pastor and specifically as a preacher.  Where can one understand Owen’s perspective of pastoral ministry and preaching?  This book by Pastor Theologian Justin Miller is a helpful work on Owen’s pastoral preaching.
